Simply Changing the World
After learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (U.N. S.D.Gs), I have been very influence on how regular humans, even middle schoolers can help with changing the issues the U.N. has mentioned.
For example, I have especially been influenced by goal #13, Climate Change. Even as a 7th grader, there is so much that I could do that would help prevent climate change, and that I have started to think about doing, such as turning off the lights to reduce my use of electricity, and not run water as long to save that too. It takes lots of energy to use water like we do, so saving water reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Recently, I have been attempting to take shorter showers to be able to save water, and reusing a water bottle instead of getting a new plastic one each time another runs out. Even by cutting down my use of water slightly, over the course of a year I will be cutting down gallons of water than what I used to use.
In addition, for trying to use energy and electricity efficiently, I have been turning off the lights more often when exiting a room. Before learning about the effects of this, I would keep lights on in my house for long periods of time, even if I’m not in the room. I’ve now learned that this was a complete waste of energy and I have been trying to remember to stop and turn off the lights when they’re not being used.
Although these are small, and minor changes, as all the numbers add up making these tiny decisions can have a huge, and great influence on the world, and preventing climate change. So, learning about the harmful effects on the world that will soon lead to a major change in the Earth’s climate, it has caused me to change the small things I do in my life that will hopefully pay off and lead to a better future.
